Year 6 RSE Letter

Dear Parent/Carer, 

This term, as part of our RSE curriculum, Y6 children will be covering the Jigsaw topic: Changing Me. There were opportunities to share your views during the parent consultation earlier this year, and gain more information about this. However, we thought it might be helpful for you to know what we will be teaching and discussing this term. Please see below for a breakdown of what each lesson will cover. 

 Lesson 1: Self-image and self-esteem 

Learning Intention – I am aware of my own self-image and how my body image fits into that 

Lesson 2: Puberty (girl and boy changes) 

Learning Intention – I can explain how girls’ and boys’ bodies change during puberty, and understand the importance of looking after yourself physically and emotionally. 

This lesson will contain scientific vocabulary such as Pubic Hair, Hormones, Adolescence, Vagina, Penis, Testicles, Ovaries, Menstruation. 

Lesson 3: Babies – conception to birth 

Learning Intention – I can describe how a baby develops from conception through the nine months of pregnancy, and how it is born. 

This lesson will contain scientific vocabulary such as Pregnancy, Embryo, Foetus, Placenta, Umbilical cord, Labour, Contractions, Cervix, Midwife. 

Lesson 4: Boyfriends and Girlfriends 

Learning Intention – I understand how being physically attracted to someone changes the nature of the relationship and what that might mean about having a girlfriend/boyfriend. 

This lesson will contain scientific vocabulary such as Attraction, Relationship, Pressure, Love, Sexting. 

Lesson 5: Real self and ideal self 

Learning Intention – I am aware of the importance of a positive self-esteem and what I can do to develop it. 

Lesson 6: The year ahead 

Learning intention – I can identify what I am looking forward to and what worries me about the transition to secondary school /or moving to my next class.
