The Summerhill Curriculum

Curriculum Overview

Summerhill Citizens access a comprehensive curriculum designed to give them everything they need to ‘make their futures shine’.

Underpinned by a language rich, oracy-based approach to learning, children’s academic as well and personal and social needs are developed within a curriculum that is adapted to meet individual children’s needs.

As a long-standing member of the Cabot Learning Federation group of schools, we have created our curriculum along with subject experts from across the Trust (see below), and enact this in our community to inspire a sense of status, belonging and esteem in the children we serve.

Summerhill Citizens are supported to gain the skills and knowledge they need as mathematicians, authors, scientists, athletes and many more areas of the curriculum, while at the same time being kind, safe, respectful learners as part of our amazing community.

Learning opportunities are designed to meet the needs of all children, including those that may need extra support, and our expert team pride themselves in ensuring that all children meet their potential and are ready to go to secondary school with everything they need to thrive.

We love talking about our school, and if you would any more information or a visit to see how we create our fantastic Summerhill Citizens, please get in touch to book a meeting or tour with Mr Barratt.

Summerhill Core Values

Phonics

All Summerhill Citizens are supported to enjoy a love of reading, regardless of their starting points. While many children join Summerhill Academy already proficient in phonics and reading, some do not, and our expert team support these children to make rapid progress. Where needed, children are assessed and given what they need to become excellent readers, whether that be a Read, Write, Inc. or Fresh Start-based programme, Switch On, support with reading fluency, or a bespoke approach based on each child’s individual needs. All children achieve success in reading at Summerhill and thrive across the curriculum as a result, as well as develop a true love and appreciation of reading as a life skill.

Meeting Need

Our expert teaching teams design learning that ensures that all children thrive and achieve well to meet their potential. Summerhill colleagues know all of our Summerhill Citizens really well and can support them to make the next steps in their learning journeys across the curriculum. As a result, our kind, safe, respectful learners feel success in school and beyond, ready to thrive into their futures. Where children need additional and different support, whatever that may be, bespoke programmes can be used, where necessary coordinated by our SENDCo, Kirstie Coombes.
